Stages

Development

Character Designs

The designs were heavily influenced by movies, as such, Daehoon Kim, Iggymob Producer, said “As for movies that influenced our designs, we watched a lot of Equilibrium and Desperado.” While Yasuhiro Nightow was announced to be the game’s character designer in the announcement[1], he was replaced by Ikumi Nakamura, known for her works in Bayonetta and the Evil Within series.[2]

A developer complimented her style, and she was directly involved within the visual aspects of the game, and that her character design “added sophistication and uniqueness to the characters”. Before she was involved, Yensen the Boostmaster, one of the bosses for the game, apparently used to look like ” run-of-the-mill ninja type”, now “has six arms and four katanas – this is an example of how she was able to bring strong personalities to once plain-looking characters.”[3]

Later on, Ikumi was interviewed, and stated how she was always a fan of Yasuhiro Nightow; and that’s what got her into Gungrave. Continuing, she said that she was happy when Iggymob contacted her, and was very glad that she was working with Nightow indirectly.[4] She said that it was hard and was once, very confused on what to do because of the pressure she felt and adding the “Ikumi-nized” style was the most challenging.[5]

Music

The original music composer for the games, Tsuneo Imahori, was replaced by Shibata Tetsuya (known for DMC, FF XV) and Aoki Yoshino (BoF, FF XV) respectively. Aiming for a more, modernized music; the two aims to make a music that fits with the “unique world of G.O.R.E”, regardless of the genre of the music that they’re making for the game.[6]

Shibata’s reasons for joining on the project is that, he thought that the game was very stylish and cool when he first saw it; because of the impression he got, he was happy to join on the project. They thought that Tsuneo’s work on the original Gungrave games were very nicely done, however, they’re planning to “introduce a style of music that is much more evolved”. They would also very much like to satisfy both long-time fans of the game, who’ve been waiting for so long for this game to release, as well as those who are new to the game.

Delays

When the game was announced, the end title of the video showed that it would release at Winter 2019. However, it was eventually delayed for reasons to make it “cooler”, to an extent; Game Director Kay and producer Jun announced in a forum of Gungrave, saying that it took longer than expected because they were searching for extra developers and artists, however, once they were in on the project; they realized that they could make something better than they originally planned, therefore, it was delayed to 2020. [7]

However, once 2020 ends however; the game was still not released, and information on the game was very hard to find; rather, there were no new information about the game released by the developers of the game, which, of course lead to another delay. Fortunately, in 2021, a new trailer was released, and it was set to finally release on 11 November, 2022.
