Dying Light: The Beast – Kyle Crane Returns in Standalone Survival Horror
Dying Light: The Beast is a 2025 survival horror video game. Techland both developed and published this title. Initially, the team planned it as downloadable content (DLC) for Dying Light 2: Stay Human. However, a script leak prompted the developers to release it as a standalone game.
The game launched on September 18, 2025, for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Subsequently, a release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One followed later in 2025.
Gameplay: Parkour, Vehicles, and the Beast Within
Dying Light: The Beast delivers an action-adventure experience from a first-person perspective. It expertly combines fluid movement with brutal combat.
Setting and Exploration
The game takes place in Castor Woods, a former rural tourist destination in the Western Alps. Now, zombies completely infest this beautiful area. As a result, players explore this open world using returning protagonist Kyle Crane’s signature parkour skills. In addition, players can now drive a 4×4 vehicle for the first time.
Combat and Mechanics
The day-night cycle forms a core mechanic. For instance, zombies are slow during the day. Conversely, they become significantly more aggressive and hostile at night. This dynamic places a strong emphasis on survival.
Crane utilizes a variety of melee weapons and firearms. Furthermore, he possesses superhuman abilities. He can enter “Beast Mode,” which lets him unleash powerful bare-handed attacks and hurl environmental objects for massive damage. Players also unlock new skills for Crane to boost his combat prowess as they progress. Finally, the game supports 4-player cooperative multiplayer, a staple of the Dying Light series.
Story Premise: Crane’s Revenge
The story features the return of Kyle Crane, the protagonist from the first Dying Light. Eight years after his transformation into a sentient Volatile in Dying Light: The Following, Crane hid from the Global Relief Effort (GRE). Subsequently, a mysterious villain known as The Baron captured him.
The Baron subjected Crane to 13 years of torture and experimentation. Consequently, this ordeal left Crane with a mix of zombie and human DNA. Crane finally escapes. He swears revenge against his tormentor. Moreover, he must fight the “beast within” his own volatile nature.
Plot Summary
Escape and Alliance
Crane escapes during a lab containment breach. Crucially, a woman named Olivia aids him. He soon discovers that the experiments gave him the temporary strength of a Volatile. Olivia’s scientist father is The Baron’s prisoner. Therefore, she agrees to help Crane seek revenge.
She instructs Crane to slay the Baron’s experimental Chimeras (mutated infected). He must extract a substance (GSB) from them to empower himself and seek out allies. Meanwhile, Olivia collects samples from the defeated Chimeras to understand The Baron’s master plan.
Seeking Allies and The Baron’s Interference
Crane finds survivors at the local Town Hall; the Sheriff leads this group. The survivors warn him about a “Beast” hunting The Baron’s men. Crane and the Sheriff infiltrate a mine to kill The Baron directly. However, the Sheriff betrays Crane. She tries to hand him over to the “Beast” that The Baron is hunting. The Beast intervenes, which allows Crane to escape captivity.
The Exiles and Aiden Caldwell
Later in the story, Crane connects with a group of infected exiles. Lydia leads these former test subjects who developed telepathic abilities. They capture a scientist named Camilo. Camilo agrees to help them enhance their mind-control abilities over the infected.
The Baron later attacks the Town Hall using his Chimeras. The Sheriff returns from exile and helps Crane defend the Town Hall until Lydia mind-controls the Chimeras and sends them away. The Sheriff apologizes, explaining The Baron coerced her to protect her people.
Confrontation and Revelation
Now united, the allies decide to capture the mysterious Beast. They plan to use him to lure The Baron out of his fortress. Crane successfully lures the Beast into a trap, and Lydia subdues him using mind control.
The Beast wakes up and reveals he is Aiden Caldwell, the protagonist of Dying Light 2. The Baron had captured Aiden and Spike (an old friend of Crane’s) while they tried to rescue Crane. The Baron captures Olivia and Spike and demands Crane surrender.
Final Act and A New War
Consequently, Crane and his allies decide to directly assault the Baron’s fortress. During the assault, Olivia seemingly betrays them, allowing the Baron to capture everyone. The Baron reveals he planned Crane’s entire escape for the two of them to finish his work. He executes Spike and Camilo. At this moment, Olivia enacts her true plan: she distracts the Baron while Lydia disturbs his consciousness.
Crane corners The Baron at his helipad. The Baron injects himself with the perfected virus, becoming the ultimate Chimera. Undeterred, Crane defeats and kills the mutated Baron by impaling his heart with a metal pipe.
Finally, Crane’s former GRE handler contacts him. She thanks him for eliminating The Baron (who had become a liability) and grants Crane his freedom. Nevertheless, Crane and his allies swear to continue their fight, turning their attention toward the GRE itself.
Development and Critical Reception
Design and Scope
The Beast was initially the second DLC for Dying Light 2. A script leak prompted Techland to pivot the project into a standalone game. They describe it as a “compact experience,” noting it offers shorter playtime than its predecessors. Unlike Dying Light 2‘s branching structure, this game features a linear narrative.
Techland’s franchise director, Tymon Smektala, confirmed that the studio enthusiastically supported bringing back Kyle Crane. Furthermore, Roger Craig Smith returned to voice the character, portraying him as “older, more haunted, and driven by a strong desire for revenge.”
Focus on Survival
Techland emphasized survival more heavily compared to Dying Light 2. They sought to “recapture” the fear players felt when they first played Dying Light. Consequently, weapons and vehicles are not durable. This lack of durability forces players to constantly adapt to different combat scenarios.
Setting and Engine
The team drew inspiration from Twin Peaks for the Castor Woods setting, describing it as a “rural, forested valley.” Although the natural environment provided fewer obvious parkour opportunities, the team cleverly designed landmarks and buildings. This design ensures players must still use Crane’s agility to reach objectives. The game utilizes an evolved version of Techland’s C-Engine.
Announcement and Release
Techland officially announced The Beast at Gamescom 2024. They initially set the release for August 2025, but a delay pushed it to September 2025. Importantly, players who owned the Ultimate Edition of Dying Light 2 received The Beast for free. Techland offered this as a gesture to “show appreciation for the community who patiently waited for the DLC.”
Critical Response
Dying Light: The Beast earned “generally favorable” reviews for the PC and PlayStation 5 versions. Nevertheless, the Xbox Series X/S version received “mixed or average” reviews, according to Metacritic.
